Single-family residence in the historic part of the affluent suburb of Bistritza, located just few miles away from the business district of Sofia, the political and economic center of Bulgaria. The historic surroundings and the determination of the owner dictated the strong emphasis on the traditional architectural language. The house has thus become a modern interpretation of the typically vernacular imagery and detailing. The contemporaneity is sought in the restraint from clichés or formalistic escapes into the realm of nostalgia. The program is conventional, derived from the traditional forms and spatial relationships of the vernacular house with an attempt to import some elements of a higher living standard into a more conservative milieu. The overall gross area is around 3,500 sf. Design was developed in 2009, construction is ongoing.
